Bears -

Another successful week at Berlin.  As I walk the building each day, I continue to be impressed but not surprised regarding all of the GREAT things happening in and around 3140BSR!  I also am very impressed with the resolve and dedication of our students here at Berlin, as well as our students that are CDL.  The maturity, positive attitudes, and overall determination showed by all students to "control what they can control" is very impressive!  In addition, our staff continues to lead by example, and most importantly, they keep moving forward!

Last, in this message of thanks, thank you parents for supporting all of us here in the building and allowing us to lead, work with, and build relationships every day with your sons and daughters.  We are very lucky and grateful to be here at Berlin and be a part of the Bear Family!

Please have a great weekend, remind your student(s) that Monday and Tuesday are still days "on", even though they are home, and finally have a safe, relaxing, and peaceful thanksgiving.

Clawsup!

Remember, Berlin Pride.... It's Forever!

Principal's Message 11.6.20

Bears,

Here we go.... the 2nd nine weeks!  At 3140BSR, we focus on what we CAN DO and not on what we cannot do.  We also work very hard to be positive and to KEEP MOVING FORWARD.  Focusing on the negative things and also on what we cannot do is like trying to PUSH a car up a hill with a rope.  Think about it...  πŸ˜‰

So, with that being said, we had a great 1st nine weeks, and we are now ready to have a great 2nd nine weeks.  As always, please continue to reach out and let us know if you have questions or need some help.  The goal here at Berlin is to put all of our efforts into supporting our BEARS and working to make them as successful as possible.  Please see the list of dates, times, and events below so that you are up to speed on all things double blue!

That is all for now, here are those bullet points:

-November 5-8: OBHS Theater One Acts

- November 11 and 12: OBHS will be operating on a Homebase Schedule

- November 12:  NHS Induction "Virtual" be on the lookout for more information

Remember....Berlin Pride, It's Forever!

Principal's Message 10.30.20

Bears -

November is here!  It seems like yesterday when we were all gearing up for a return to school in August, and preparing to welcome back the DoubleBlue family.  I wanted to take a few moments to update everyone on where we are in the school year, send along a thank you, or two and also congratulate some folks along the way.

Fast forward a bit, and here we are wrapping up the first full 9 weeks of school.  We are also finishing up the Fall athletic season and what a season it was!  I know that there was a lot of uncertainty in regard to even playing 1 game or contest, let alone having a season.  The spotlight many times is on Football because that seems to be a whole community event on Friday nights.  Not only did they play but completed 9 games this season.  In addition, the Pride of the Bears, the Berlin Marching Band, played at all home contests, and then even played at home (thank you Mr. Reeves) when the team was on the road.  What a success that was!

In fact, we still have a few teams competing in the postseason.  Our boys and girls cross country teams run on Saturday in Pickerington, and our boys' soccer team plays Saturday as well in the District final.  Good luck to all of our student-athletes competing this weekend.  As always, the 3140BSR family is behind you!

Academically, our students continue to work hard even in the hybrid setting.  We all know that adjustments had to be made, schedules had to be adjusted and mindsets had to be changed a bit, but after almost 9 weeks, I can say that students adapted and adjusted the best they could, and they should be congratulated for doing so!  However, make no mistake about it, that is in large part to the Bear teachers.  In fact, in my 25 years in education, there is no doubt that the support level, understanding, flexibility, and overall compassion is unmatched when it comes to Berlin Teachers.  Lessons are recorded on weekends, before school, after school, during lunches, and then recorded again.  Additional virtual TEAM sessions are set up with individual students, groups of students, and a lot of time is set aside to meet "mask to mask" when need be as well during many of those times too.  The amount of collaboration, parent/teacher meetings, and informal as well as formal Professional Development that takes place with this teaching staff set the bar for educators around the state.

We are all blessed to have the hard-working, dedicated, compassionate, and professional teachers we have here at 3140BSR.  In my role as the building leader, I am fortunate to be here many times 7 days a week before the day starts and long after it ends.  That is just part of the deal when you are the Principal.  Like I said, no complaints, I am blessed.  However, I say that because I am able to witness first hand the number of hours put in by this phenomenal group of educators and sometimes this can be unintentionally overlooked.  Our teachers do not put in all of the EXTRA time (and trust me, it is extra time) because they have to, they do it because they want to.  It is time away from their own families and priorities and they do it for the BEAR STUDENT FAMILY.  My son graduated last year from Berlin and spent 2 years in the building, and they did it for him.  Your student(s) are here now and they are doing it for them.  So, I would ask that the next time you see or talk to one of our best, make sure you take a minute to say thank you or give a virtual bear bump or a claws up.  Our teachers do not do any of this to be thanked, but it would mean the world to them to get that "thank you" or virtual recognition!

That is all for now, and I want to thank you for allowing me a few minutes to thank the great educators here in the building.

As always, please reach out if you need any additional support or have a question, and I will do my best to help in any way that I can.

Remember, Berlin Pride...It's Forever!

Principal's Message 10.23.20

Hi Bears -

As always, here is the end of the week message out of 3140BSR.  I work hard to make sure that I send information that is useful and time-sensitive so as to keep everyone in the loop on all things happening with the DoubleBlue.  As we head towards the end of the quarter, here are some heads ups and reminders.

The end of the quarter is Thursday, October 29th.  This is also the day where our students that signed up are taking the PSAT.  All students that did not sign up are on a virtual at home day.

In addition, it is also Senior Planning Day- Seniors are asked to use this day to schedule college visits, fill out college applications, or take care of Naviance tasks.  Have your student reach out to their guidance counselor with any questions.

On Friday, October 30th we have no school due to a teacher work-day.

November the 11th and 12th we will be on HomeBase schedules in honor of our Veteran's day virtual ceremony.  I would encourage your students to share what happened during those days with you once they get home.

Please know that we are working as hard as we can to help and support you and your student here in the building.  If you have any questions or need some additional support, I would encourage you to reach out to me or a member of the counseling team

A-D  -  Dana Stearns

E-K  - Samantha Kigar

L-Re - Alexandria Nicolay

Rh-Z - Abigail Smith

That is all for now, once again, please reach out if you need any help or additional support.

Principal's Message 10.20.20

Bears -   I wanted to send out a mid-week message to keep everyone updated on all things Double Blue here at 3140BSR!

We are moving right along and are now well over the halfway point of the first nine weeks of school and heading to the end of the nine weeks.  We have had all our class meetings, we have had students take the ACT here in the building, the first round of parent-teacher virtual conferences are complete, and now our athletic teams are competing in tournament play!   Athletically speaking, I would encourage you to jump on our athletic Twitter site or the athletic webpage for the latest updates on all things relating to Berlin sports.

In addition to academic and athletic progress, as you know, a very large part of who we are here at Berlin and what we believe in is doing things together and standing shoulder to shoulder.  Even during the pandemic, our Bears are finding ways to make this happen.  With that being said, our School Store The Bears Den is in the process of taking donations in the fight against Breast Cancer.  They are also taking Pink-out shirt orders as well.  These pink-out shirts will be used all year long any time that we have a pink out during a spirit week or during a sports season.  So, no rush to order a shirt, as they will be used all year long.

However, this Thursday and Friday are going to be DoubleBlue Pink-out days.  So, either wear The Shirt from the school store or maybe a pink tie, a pink hair ribbon, pink pants, pink sweater, etc...  It does not matter.  Any way that you choose to show your OBHS Pride and support the fight against breast cancer and add to the culture of togetherness that we have built here at Berlin will be appreciated!

In closing, here are some dates to keep in mind as we look to the weeks ahead:

October 29th - PSAT - Only students that signed up for the PSAT should be in school.  The test will begin promptly at 7:20 am. All other students are virtual that day.

October 30th - No School - This is a teacher workday

Nov 11th & 12th - Homebase Schedule (Virtual Veteran's Day Remembrance Ceremony)

November 25th, 26th, 27th -Thanksgiving Break

November 30th, No School for students - Teacher PD day

That is all for now,  thank you for your continued support.  Please remember, Berlin Pride.... It's Forever!

Hello Bear Families -

I hope this edition of the BEAR TRACKS finds you well.  We have had a great first 5 weeks of this 9 week period to kick off the year.  We are over the hump and on the home stretch now.  The teachers are working double-time to help all students and I can tell you the students are working hard as well!  With that being said, there is a lot happening in and around the building, so I wanted to make sure everyone was in the loop and on the same page with information.  Please know you can always reach out if you have any questions.  Also, the Building's twitter page is a great resource for all things BERLIN!

With that being said, here we go:

  • Class of 2021 - A tradition that started last year is our "Senior Salute" publication.  This is a keepsake that you and your family will have forever.  IT is a "mini" picture memory book for seniors.   Here is the link with all the information. Senior Salute Information.

  • End of the nine weeks is the 29th of October.  Please continue to check PowerSchool to make sure everything is turned in!

  • October 14th and 15th we will be on a Homebase schedule - Homebase Schedule

  • Class of 2021 - Senior portraits sign up is on Schoology in Mrs. Bush's Schoology page

  • Picture makeup for grades 9-11 is on Oct 20th and 22nd all day in the building.

  • There is No School on 16th and 30th due to COTA day and also a Teacher workday

  • The PSAT is on the 29th and only students that have signed up to take the PSAT should come to school on that day

That is all for now.  We are very happy that everyone is in the building even if it is on an "A" and "B" day schedule.  If we continue to social distance, wash hands, sanitize, and wear masks, we should continue to all stay healthy!

Have a great weekend, and remember....Berlin Pride, It's Forever!!

Bears -

Another great week has come and gone here at 3140BSR!  This week was an eventful one as we had an athletic event every night, Virtual Parent / Teacher conferences on Thursday night, and class meetings both Wednesday and Thursday!  Wow, a lot of hustle and bustle in and around the building, but that is how we like it, and it was all positive!

As we met with each of the classes individually in the auditorium and on separate days, the conversation and presentation included but was not limited to things regarding:

  • Academics and credits/requirements
  • Athletics and eligibility and responsibility
  • Appropriate behavior in and around the building as Bears
  • Extracurricular activities and getting involved
  • College, application letters as well as getting accepted
  • Mental Health awareness and tips and techniques
  • Inclusiveness and diversity
  • Dress code and wearing appropriate clothing
  • Remaining positive and remember to always keep moving forward

There were other things covered and discussed depending on grade level, but those were some of the main topics.  Our student's services team did a very nice job covering different areas and the presentations were filmed.  Please be on the lookout in the next few days as we plan to post them to the website.

Another academic note is that the date for the National offering of the ACT exam is October 6th at Berlin.  The room numbers are posted and located outside of student services and the main office area.  On the 6th (Tuesday), all students taking the exam need to be in their testing room at 7:15 am.  This is very important so that we are able to start the exam on time.  Students will not be permitted into the testing room after 7:20 am. So, please set that alarm(s) and be in the testing room at 7:15 am.  If you are not taking the ACT, then you do NOT come to school, this will be a virtual day for everyone.  Once again, not taking the test?  Do not come to school.  It is a virtual day.

Last, as we make the turn into the back end of the 9 weeks, it is VERY important that if your student is struggling in one or more classes that they reach out to that teacher to discuss opportunities for success.  These could be extra study sessions, copies of supplemental materials, on-line supplemental options, etc...  Regardless of what the options might be, it is SO important that your Bear reach out and communicate with their teacher.  We talk all the time about building relationships here at Berlin, and this is another way to do just that!

With that being said, we continue to move forward, and regardless of mask-wearing, social distancing, hand washing, and sanitizing, our Bears are doing a great job of following all policies and protocols. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please make sure you reach out and touch base!

Remember, Berlin Pride, It's Forever!!

Principal's Message 9.8.20

Hello Bear Families -

I hope everyone had a great 3 day weekend!  The first week of school at 3140BSR was a big success and I am very thankful for all the positive and encouraging phone calls, emails, and face to face (SD of course) compliments from parents the last week or so.  I have always talked about the success triangle (Parents, Staff, Students), being the key to having a great school year, and OVER-COMMUNICATING from all sides is the key.  We are working hard to support, encourage, and guide the Berlin students through this Covid situation, and the response has been fantastic.  Together, we are going to do great things!

Speaking of doing things together, tomorrow night (Sept 9th) from 7-9pm is our "Virtual" Curriculum Night.   All of your student's teachers will have pre-recorded a video and attached it to their Schoology page for you to watch and review.    The video will be 5-10 minutes in length and should cover things such as Content related information, commonly asked questions about the course, contact information, homework expectations, and much more.  If you have any questions or would just like to send an email to say hi, all staff will be accessible by email from 7-9 pm tomorrow.   In addition to the teacher videos, there will be links for 9th-grade parent information as well as 12th-grade parent information.  We do this because that 9th grade transition year can be a tough one, and we want to make it as smooth as possible.  As well as the ever-important senior year.

Curriculum night presents a great opportunity to sit down with your student have them help you log in to Schoology if you have never done so before.  If your student does not know how to do this, please reach out to Student Services today or tomorrow (740-657-5919).   Please remember that some teachers have 150 students each day, so if they do not return your email immediately, they will definitely be in touch as soon as they can!

I want to finish by reminding all of you that we are working as hard as we can to make this a great school year.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to touch base!  This week follows a B, A, A, B schedule.

Continue to remind your student to sanitize, wear a mask, socially distance, and wash hands!

Keep Moving Forward!

Principal's Message 9.3.20

Hello Bear families,

I hope all is well.  We had a GREAT first 3 days of school.   Freshman's first day went very well.  The transition into high school can be a tough one, but our teachers and student leaders helped direct our incoming 400+ through their first day in the building.  A lot of relationships were built and questions were answered.  Then, our "B" group came in on Tuesday with the "A" group following things up yesterday.  All 3 days went very well.  The goal for the first 3 days was to accomplish the following:

Re-energize everyone's school spirit β—„
Talk about new traditions and on going traditions β—„
Review new safety procedures β—„
Introduce all dept members and new staff β—„
Discuss the new entrance and exit patterns β—„
Talk about expectations for cleaning the rooms β—„
Celebrate the Bear family being back together again β—„
Become familiar with hallways and classrooms β—„

As I said, all 3 days went very, very well!

We are on an "A" day schedule today, and our "B" students will be here tomorrow.  We do not have school on Monday, September 7th (Labor Day), and then will be back on Tuesday the 8th with our "B" group.  Remember, "B" meets every Tuesday and Friday, and then "A" group is every Monday and Thursday while they rotate Wednesdays.

Something we did very well with the first few days of school is follow our drop- off sites in the morning.  Please remember, we will have 3 different entrances and drop-off sites each morning.  Once students enter the building, they should head right to their 1st-period class.  Here are the entry points:

-Main entrance is for student drivers

-Athletic entrance is for student drop off

-Bus entrance is for bus riders

Arrival Map

At the end of the day, depending on where students need to go, they may leave out of any exit.  As I said above, everyone is doing a great job with this!

A few last reminders for everyone:

-Please remember that curriculum night is September 9th from 7-9pm.  This will be a virtual night, and more information will follow.  However, you will be able to access videos on Schoology from every teacher that discusses classroom procedures, homework, grading policies, contact information, etc...  We will also have other school-related information on Schoology as well that night.

-Please remind your student that they are still accountable for all work on the days they are not in the building.  The way we are reminding students is by saying that there are no days off.

-Please remind your student to wash hands, social distance, sanitize, and always wear a mask on the property

-No different than any other time they are not feeling well, please make the determination about sending them to school if they are not feeling well as you would if they had a cough or headache, etc...  The key is to call the attendance office (740-657-5930) so we are not marking them truant.

-Last, we are working hard to honor our seniors of 2021 and do some special things for them.  This Friday, we are selling Livestream tickets to the first 100 students.  Mrs. Mimna has the tickets.  The game will be watched in the stadium (socially distanced), and the band will be performing a show as well.  There will be no chalk or student section type atmosphere, but it is an opportunity for seniors to be together and watch their classmates.

That is all for now.  I appreciate all of your supportive emails and we are working to make this a great year!!

Do not hesitate to reach out or call if you have any additional questions!

If you have not followed the building site on twitter, I would encourage you to do so:

Hello Bear Families -

Clawsup!!  This communication will look similar to my last email, but I have added some notes and kept the other ones in so you can see it repeatedly and be on top of things!  As you already know, my goal is to always try and over-communicate.

Every week, I will send out a Principal's message and also update that week's edition of the BEAR TRACKS.  In addition to those two forms of communication, I will work hard to put links, pictures, and information on our building twitter page as well.  The address for that page is OlentangyBerlinBears @todd_spinner  Even if you are not a person that tweets things out, it is a quick and easy way to get information.  Trust me, I will always work to make that page positive πŸ˜‰  The Athletic twitter page will also have updated athletic information.
@BerlinBearsAD

With that being said, I do have some new points of information and procedure changes for the upcoming school year.  Please know that all changes or modifications are made due to safety reasons or due to our Hybrid schedule model.  Also, I will begin and end-all of my messages with a reminder for the BEAR community when they are on our campus:

Sanitize
Wear your Mask
Wash your hands
Social Distance

1 – Exit and Entrance protocol and procedures - First, we will have 3 different entrances for students in the morning before school.  Our doors will open at 7:10 AM (this is new) and entrances are as follows:

Athletic Entrance (Across from Stadium)  - Parent Drop Off

Bus Loop Entrance - (Loop behind the Building)  -Buses

Once again, the doors will open at 7:10 AM for students to enter the building and go directly to 1st-period class.  We will no longer be gathering in the commons before school.

2 – Schedules and Classes / Student Services - During this pandemic, we have worked very hard with the district and our building personnel to adjust and pivot our schedules to satisfy all needs and schedule requests.  However, you might notice that when schedules are released next week (Aug 24th), there are some courses that were requested, that are no longer on your student's schedules.  Most of these adjustments or changes revolve around elective course offerings.  If you have questions once you view your student's schedule, please reach out to your student's school counselor.  As updates are made to the schedules, students should check PowerSchool and see if there have been adjustments up until the first day of school.  Please understand that we will do what we can to meet the request, but any change to a schedule is a domino effect.  Also, please continue to be patient and understanding as we work to meet needs and requests.  Our counselors will work to communicate back to you once they are able to do so.  Please also note the new counselor (Mrs. Kigar) as well as the new alphabet breakdown.

3 - August 31st is the first day of school - for Freshman ONLY.  Please know, the entrances will be the same as above, and doors will open at 7:10 AM.  More specific information will follow next week.  The first day is all about relationships and learning the building and teachers, cheers, etc…  No need to bring any school supplies!

4 – Upperclassmen days  - Sept 1st and 2nd are the first days for the rest of the building grades 10-12.  ("B" group is on the 1st L-Z) and ("A" group is on the 2nd A-K).  Doors will open at 7:10 AM and more specific information will follow next week.

5 -  Safety measures - Students will notice new safety measures this year, we have added directional arrows in our hallways and stairwells.  We will also be limiting the number of students in each of the bathrooms and other areas as well, throughout the school day.

6 – Traditions - A new tradition to 3140BSR hallways. We have an 8 foot in diameter Floor Seal placed in front of the Media Center that will be there for all to see.  Out of respect for all that we have built at Berlin and what we believe in, we will never, walk on the Bear in our house.

7 – BYOD building – In a constant effort to cut down on sharing of devices and points of contact for safety and health reasons, OBHS is a Bring Your Own Device building.  So, if your student has a Chromebook or laptop or phone, by all means, bring those in your backpack.  This way, they are the only ones touching those devices.

8 – No lockers - There are no lockers being assigned this school year.  Students will carry all supplies and books in backpacks.  Please make sure you make note of this change.

9 - PowerSchool-Just a reminder that PowerSchool will be available beginning Monday, August 24, 2020, at 8 AM.

10 – New Family - Please join me in welcoming our new BEAR Family members to our staff.  We are excited about the opportunities provided to our staff to teach as we continue to navigate the challenges of a pandemic while going back to school. Principal's Message 8.19.20

Hello Bear Families -

I hope all is well! Trust me, I will always work to make that page positive πŸ˜‰

With that being said, I do have some new points of information and procedure changes for the upcoming school year.  Please know that all changes or modifications are made due to safety reasons or due to our Hybrid schedule model.  Also, I will begin and end-all of my messages with a reminder for the BEAR community when they are on our campus:

Principal's Message 8.7.20

Hello Bear Families!

I wanted to reach out to all incoming students and families and "re-start" the weekly communication between Berlin HS and our Bear Family members.  Every week, I send out what I call the "Bear Tracks" to all families.  This communication will have all kinds of information about anything and everything having to do with OBHS.  Sometimes, I will even send an additional "Bear Tracks" out if we are holding testing in the building, homecoming week, or anything that might require additional communication from my office.

This communication is special because it is the first time that I will officially welcome the class of 2024 to communication!!  Wow....2024!!  I am very excited to get to know all of you.  Also, welcome back, 2021, 2022, and 2023!  Seems like just yesterday that we were holding our ceremonies for the class of 2020.  I know that we did not end the year the way we all would have liked to have ended it, but when I look back, we did A LOT of things to celebrate our accomplishments and we all made the best out of an, at times, frustrating situation.  In addition, we are not starting the year maybe how we hoped to start it, but we are going to make it great and do everything we can so that all 4-grade levels have a FANTASTIC school year at 3140BSR!!

In fact, I am in the process of ordering our new class of 2024 shirts and our staff shirts for this year.  Both shirts reflect the message of "moving forward", and "stronger together".  That is true in a lot of areas and arenas, but now more than ever, all of us need to MOVE FORWARD and remember that we are STRONGER TOGETHER!

I want to end with letting everyone know that there is a lot of information in this communication, and when I send the next email next week, this information will be repeated.  I work very hard to OVER communicate. Last, please know that the first day of school on August 31st is for the class of 2024 ONLY.  Then, Sept 1st and 2nd will be for the rest of the grades and split per the alphabet.  More details will follow in the coming days/weeks in regard to those schedules and other policies, plans, and procedures.  Please use the resources and links below to stay informed, and please never worry about reaching out to the building with questions as well!

Connecting to OBHS Information: At Berlin High School, we stress the importance of over-communication.  We want all our parents, students, and staff to be aware of important dates and events.  To make sure that you are receiving the most up-to-date information, use this How to Connect guide to help you plug-in. How to Connect

A Message from our School Counselors:

Welcome back OBHS Bears!!!!  The counselors are hard at work getting schedules ready for your return.  Please email or call your counselor if you have questions.  Students can Schoology message their counselor, too.  Please continue to be patient with us as we are working through our emails and messages from parents and students.  We are excited to welcome a new counselor to the team.  Samantha Kigar is joining our team and is eager to start working with our OBHS Bears!  The new breakdown for counselors is:

Dana Stearns (dana_stearns@olsd.us) - Last names A-D

Samantha Kigar (samantha_kigar@olsd.us) - Last names E-K
