Principal's Message
Berlin High School

April 19, 2024

Hello Bear Families -

We had another great week at 3140BSR! OST testing has been very well supported and I know our Bears did their best during these tests. Also, spirit week was sponsored by the class of 2025 and was a huge success. If you follow our social media sites, you have seen the smiles, participation, and overall culture we have built at Berlin. Wow, impressive stuff!!

We are getting ready to finish the week with a pep assembly and then it is PROM weekend. With that said, from the crash cars that help to remind students to make great decisions, to the announcements over the PA and the messaging at the pep rally about being safe, we are doing our absolute best to remind students we care about them and want to see them safe and sound back at 3140BSR on Monday!!

Athletically, our spring sports are really hitting full stride. I would like to highlight two of our teams and let you know that our boys' lacrosse team as well as our baseball teams have been hard to beat the last three weeks and their records show it. We have many student athletes really working hard in all sports, but those were two that have turned it up a notch and are firing on all cylinders. I encourage you to come on out to see ALL spring sports and catch a game or a match!

Last, we had a fantastic Arts festival this past weekend. Every teacher and student involved really knocked it out of the park! We had thousands of people come through and everyone had a blast! Music, food, art, and fantastic fellowship!!

That is all for today. We have great things on the horizon, and I have included the senior timeline link below, but I would encourage you to check out our social media sites and keep up with all things Berlin!

Hello Bear families,

We have reached the end of another fantastic week at 3140BSR. It was a week full of academic and performing arts activities. Academically, we had our first OST testing date this week and things went off without a hitch. I am so impressed with our students focusing on and making sure that they are on top of the adjusted schedule. As we move forward with this testing schedule in the next week or so, please continue to be aware of those testing dates and times.

Additionally, we held all-class meetings this past week, and our students responded exceptionally well! We discussed many areas involving academics, athletics, performing arts, attitude, and culture. We focused on the common theme of the 23-24 school year, finishing strong!

Today, students in the building presented a mental health awareness activity fair in the commons during all lunch periods. This was enjoyed by everyone in the building. The Sherrif’s Department brought two therapy dogs, students had different booth activities discussing how to take care of each other, and students/counselors were out and about talking about ways Improve mental health awareness.

We have also had many successes on the athletic fields. Our girls’ and boys’ lacrosse teams were victorious this week and our boys’ volleyball team had a big victory last evening against a crosstown rival and is 13-1. All spring sports are working hard.

Finally, this Sunday, our Art departments will be holding our traditional art show. It promises to be a wonderful event! It is on Sunday from 12-4pm.

Next week is our spirit week and then PROM

Monday is decades day, Tuesday is comfy day, Wednesday is Western Wednesday, Thursday is Celebrity look-a-like day, Friday is Double Blue Friday. Also, we will hold our afternoon PROM assembly on Friday. In addition, we will have PROM Saturday night from 8-11pm.  As a safety reminder, I will have crash cars outside of our building.  There will be signs about not texting and driving or driving under the influence. We want all of our students to have a safe, healthy and happy PROM week!

That is all for today. I know that we will continue to do everything we can to support and help all students and staff here to finish strong!

Hello Bear Families -

There are tons of wonderful things happening in and around 3140BSR! I want to send out a few updates and reminders as we get closer to the middle of the month and to the end of the year.

First, I wanted to remind everyone that repairs for getting back on the fields for athletics will take some time. However, there is good news to report. We were able to hold a lacrosse game last night on the stadium turf. Our Physical Education and track athletes will be using the track for practice, and it looks as if our baseball and softball teams will be back in action on the fields this weekend (or Monday) as long as mother nature cooperates. So, thank you for your patience. We are working as hard as we can to safely get back to as close to normal as possible outside. 😉

Next, this is good and bad news about our vape detectors in all of our bathroom facilities at Berlin. The good news is that they do work. Our administrative team follows up anytime we get a detected alarm from the vape detectors. The bad news is that they do work, and we follow up and then subsequently discipline those violating our district drug and alcohol/nicotine policy. Please remind your student(s) that just like you do, we care about their health and safety and will continue to do everything we can to keep them safe.

Also, I want to send out a reminder as I do every year about Senior Tag. This is a game that some seniors like to play involving water or nerf guns. Teams compete to get other teams out of the game. Please know that I 100% do not support this game as there have been dangerous life-threatening situations surrounding the game in neighboring districts over the past ten to fifteen years. Moreover, the mentioning of guns in a school is not a joke and certainly nothing to take lightly. In fact, look-alike weapons (nerf or water guns) will be cause for disciplinary action. As an eighteen-year veteran principal and having been in public education for almost thirty years, I do not have the luxury of discerning who is joking when it comes to guns or look-alike weapons at Berlin. If any of this does happen in and around the property, the matter will be handled very seriously, and law enforcement may be notified. Your students' safety is just too important to me.

Lastly, we have SO MANY POSITIVE things happening now, and on the horizon. I want to make sure that I am doing my best to highlight those events. Join us for the Spring OBHS ART FESTIVAL! This is on April 14th from 12-4:00 here at 3140BSR. There will be art, food, music and more! This really is something that the whole family can enjoy. Most of it is inside, so rain or shine, it is on! Next week, I will be holding "ALL CLASS MEETINGS" in the auditorium to remind each grade level of what the end of the year looks like and how we need to make sure that we all stay on point to finish strong.

Athletically, all our spring sports are in full swing. From now until the end of the year, if you come up to the building on most days starting at 5:00pm, you will be able to catch some type of game or event in the gym, stadium, or one of our fields.

Finally, our senior advisor, Mrs. Mimna, has worked hard to put together tons of events and activities for our seniors. Here is the link Path to Graduation for all of you, and I would encourage you to look so that you and your senior do not miss out. I would also encourage you to check out the official OBHS social media sites for all this information!

That is all for now. I appreciate all your support for the Double-Blue, and I look forward to finishing the rest of the year STRONG!

Hello Bear Families -

It’s the end of another great week at 3140BSR!!  Things are really rolling!

Our Performing Arts programs are in the thick of performances, as well as district and state competitions. They have received many superior and excellent ratings so far. Our Bears are always rising to the challenge. Mr. Sribanitmongkol, Mrs. Henning-Toops, Mr. Reeves, and Mrs. Gibbons, in my opinion and experience, are four of the best I have ever seen. In addition, our winter athletic teams are continuing to compete. Our boys’ basketball team just went on an 11-4 run over the last fifteen games and beat an INCREDIBLY talented Pickerington Central Team in Pickerington. Per the OHSAA, Pickerington Central has never lost in the second round of the tournament at home in recent history. It shows us what great coaching and solid team play and beliefs can accomplish! Also, we have four wrestlers (three boys, one girl) competing in the state tournament this weekend. We are so proud of our athletic programs, the work they are putting in, and what they have done this year!

Additionally, we just had a highly successful career fair put on by Mrs. Repko. Her students, along with parents and community members, came and presented what they do and how they do it. Our students had impressive conversations and interactions with everyone during the evening. It was fascinating to watch! Also, kudos to Mrs. Gestosani, Mr. Mount, Mrs. Murphy, and Mr. Blabuh, for working with our students to lead and present a wonderful month of Black History Month celebrations and educational opportunities.

I would also like to highlight the spirit week and winter sports and activities pep rally last week. We recognized almost five hundred students between our winter sport athletes, our band, and our cast and crew of Footloose. We were able to let off a little steam, cheer, and clap for our fellow Bears, as well as have some fun with a new grab-the- cone game. We finished the pep rally shoulder-to-shoulder with our Alma Mater.

That is all for now. Please review the dates, times, and activities below (especially senior timeline) so we are all on the same page with testing and other items as we continue to work hard for our Bear students.

Bears -

Wow... What a great week! So much is happening in and around 3140BSR!

Both our choir and our orchestra performed downtown last weekend. Mr. Sribanditmongkol and Mrs.Toops really showed off how far we have come in just six short years in performing arts. The whole department is amazing, but our musicians involved at the Hyatt Regency last weekend were phenomenal. Band and theater have been busy as well. Our band plays at hockey, boys', and girls’ basketball games.  In addition to that, our theater department is gearing up for Footloose. If you have not purchased tickets, I would suggest you jump online and get those ordered. We always sell out early.

Footloose Tickets

Our athletic department is shining as well. Our girls’ basketball team has won fourteen games so far this year which is a school record. Boys’ hockey is in the middle of battling for the CBJ Cup and our cheerleaders competed this morning in Florida at a national competition!!  Whew!

Academically, our students are really turning up the heat. Assessments are taking place all over the building and our students are working harder than ever to be successful in the classroom. Our juniors will be taking the ACT February 28th while the rest of the building (all 9,10,12th grade students) will have a work and study from home day. The student services department has worked hard with all our Bears to schedule classes for next year and has helped our seniors with letters of recommendation and transcript questions.

The Student Services team wanted to send out information about College Credit Plus classes for next year.

Students and Parents-Please plan to attend our CCP informational night on Thursday, February 15th at 6:30pm in the Berlin auditorium. Student Services, as well as special guest, Amber Spiegel, our advisor from Columbus State, will be presenting important CCP information.

Students- please plan to attend a CCP seminar session during a free period or lunch on Thursday, February 22nd. Student Services will be in the overlook during all periods covering important CCP steps and information.

Please visit the district CCP website to access the short, CCP informational video and to access the digital Intent to participate form. This form is REQUIRED for all students considering or planning to take CCP classes next year. It is due April 1, 2024.

CCP Information

Last, as I have mentioned in the last three or four Bear Tracks, we have an important school levy on the ballot in a few weeks. Once again, here is all the information and answers to your questions.

Dear Bear Families,

As always, I want to make sure that I am keeping everybody up to speed and in the loop on everything happening in and around 3140BSR.

We are getting ready to make the turn into February, and as always, things are rocking and rolling over at berlin High school. Last night, I was able to see our advanced ensemble under the direction of Mr. Sribanditmongkol sing two outstanding songs! There was a packed house, and it was impressive to hear the roaring round of applause for our bear singers. That same group has been chosen as one of only a few in the state of Ohio to sing at an upcoming conference. Such talented students, and we are so fortunate to be able to offer this level of musicality at the high school level.

Speaking of students in the arts, this Sunday, many of our students will have artwork featured at the Delaware Art Castle. I am excited to be able to once again see the awesome artwork that they have created. Mrs. Butler and the entire visual arts department use all the resources available to make sure that our students have access to making collegiate level and beyond artwork.

Last, our winter sports programs continue to compete. This evening our boys’ and girls’ basketball team as well as our hockey team will be competing against crosstown rivals. If you have not been able to come out to a game, whether home or away, I would encourage you to do so. We are turning to the latter part of the season, and our teams are really thriving. In fact, the girls’ varsity basketball team is 13-3!  Wow!

I want to end this by thanking all of you for helping your bear student with the scheduling timeline and process. Our student services department has worked so hard to be as communicative as possible and make sure they are answering questions both in person and through email. Our teachers truly have helped in this regard as well. Once again, please double check that your child has done everything they need to do regarding the scheduling process. If you still have a question, please reach out!

That is all for today, please review the list of dates, times, and activities listed below, and as always, please know that I appreciate all your support!

Hello Bear Family -

It was another great week at 3140BSR! Second semester classes, programs, games, and events are in full swing. All the class meetings this past week went VERY well, and of course we even had another senior class pancake, sausage, and hot-cocoa breakfast. If you are wondering if all our seniors received Senior "Stronger Together" lanyards too, do not worry, they did! Our group picture day today went very smoothly, and it was a fantastic way to finish the day. A shout-out to Mrs. Bush and the journalism students for leading the charge. Today we had ninety-five percent of our Bears in double blue!!

With that being said, we have a three-day weekend ahead of us which means a four-day week next week. So, please look at the building website, the activity and building social media sites, and if you can, head to a performance, a game, or activity and support the double blue. Many of our seniors will be heading to the traditional "Senior Class Formal Dinner" on Sunday. This is going to be big. We have almost three hundred paid and signed up to attend. Look for the photos!

Lastly, the building and district do so many amazing things for all our students and community, we want to continue to share accurate information. So, please look at the information in this link if you have questions about the upcoming levy.

Hello Bear Families,

Wow...  it’s great to see all our Bears back in the building!!  Even though we have only been back for three days, there is still a lot happening in and around Berlin. The counselors were in classes talking about scheduling options, teachers were introducing themselves to new second semester students and building relationships, classes began new lessons, and pre-assessments and projects were up and running. It is a fantastic way to begin a new semester for sure! We are also staying in stride with athletics and performing arts. I know that our choirs have several performances on the horizon, and our athletic teams have games and events tonight, tomorrow, and even on Sunday. It seems as if there is always something to do in and around 3140BSR!

With that said, we also have our annual Senior Winter Formal Dinner hosted by our senior class cabinet on Sunday, January 14th, from 6:30-9:30pm at the Villa Milano Banquet Hall. This is the third annual Senior formal dinner, and it is an evening that will be filled with great food, amazing karaoke, picture opportunities, along with prizes, and memories to last a lifetime! Olentangy Berlin High School is one of the only schools I know in the state of Ohio that puts on such a dinner. It is yet another way to say thank you to our seniors and bring the family together. Since we do not have school the following day, seniors can enjoy just being with each other in a very classy and beautiful venue with all their classmates! Class of 2024 do not miss out and sign up on the parent PowerSchool portal.

Also, the district has sent out information on the website about the particularly important upcoming levy. I have attached a link for you to visit that will help answer any questions that you might have. This is a great resource for you to see information about the levy, and once again, answer any questions that you might have about all that it entails. Please do not hesitate to reach out or attend any one of the community forums hosted at buildings around the district. We want you to have all the information you can so that you may make an informed decision.

Levy Information

Last, I want to remind everyone attending any of our athletic events, home or away, that these are high school contests. Young people aged 13-18 years old are competing and trying as hard as they can to do their best for themselves, you, their teammates, and their school. Trust me, as the dad of two graduated two-sport high school athletes (both in the OLSD), I know how passionate all of us can be when it comes to watching our sons and daughters compete no matter what the sport. I also know that there are times that I have disagreed with a coach or officials' decision or style. With that said, it is high school athletics. Just like I needed to set a good example for my son and daughter and cheer for us and not against the other team or coach or official, I need all of you to do please do the same. If you do ever have an issue, a question, or a concern, please feel free to express that and communicate that in the appropriate manner and at the appropriate time. I appreciate you understanding how important this is that we are all on the same page.

That is all for now, I appreciate your consistent support of all things Berlin, and I look forward to a highly successful second semester for all of our BEARS!

Hello Bear Families,

As we wrap up a very successful first semester at 3140BSR, I want to thank all of you for your continued support and involvement at Berlin. Since we first opened our doors in 2018, all of us vowed to make DOUBLEBLUE country something special, and something that we could all believe in. As we continue to strengthen the positive, disciplined culture and climate WE have created, it is important to remember that we can never stop our efforts in that regard. I constantly remind our family of students and staff that we all need to purposefully reinforce what we have built and follow that Bear Belief Statement every day.

With that said, once again, thank you to all of you and I wish you all the best at Christmas time and into the new year. I will be out and about at events and activities over the break, so if you are able to do so, check out the calendar and maybe I'll see you in and around 3140BSR doing the same!

Enjoy your families and friends and remember.... Berlin Pride... It's Forever!!

Dear Bear Families,

I just want to send a quick message about this past week of review. Wow...  The Bears did such a wonderful job of focusing and finishing strong! I know that we still have Monday and Tuesday of next week to take care of, so if you could review those schedules as well, that would be great.

Exam Schedule

Also, over the break, we will continue to have tons of events, activities, and games in and around the building, so I would encourage you to check all of the schedules and come to support the Bears if and when possible. Please also remember that there are many different activities coming up after the break so I would encourage you to jump on the district and building calendar and stay in the loop regarding those activities.

That is all for today, we have had a great week of review, and I know that our students are working hard to put their best foot forward during this exam time.

Tuesday -Groutfit Day

Wednesday-Jersey/Favorite team Attire Day

So, please go over their exam schedule with them to make sure they understand. If they do not have an exam, they can either be out of the building, or in the commons for quiet study time. Those are the options. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Hello Bear Families -

It was another great week at OBHS!  Here are some reminders as we get ready to head into the weekend.

First, it was great to see everyone back together again after the Thanksgiving break. We had a shortened week, but we accomplished a lot. Also, I wanted to remind everyone that we are about two weeks away from the end of the semester and mid-term exams. For our freshman, this is the first time they have taken exams in high school.  On those exam days, ALL students are responsible for being where they need to be, when they need to be there. The schedule is attached, so please review it with your student. If they do not have an exam during a certain time on a certain day, they do not need to be in the building. However, our commons are open to all students that do not have exams for quiet study time. This is 100% up to you and your student. Once again, they need to be where they are supposed to be, when they are supposed to be there. If you have questions about exam week, please contact the building, email a teacher, administrator, or counselor. We are all here to help.

Exam Schedule

Next, I am always on the announcements Monday and then again on Friday (BNN Live broadcast.) Today I reminded students and the entire Bear Family about all the reasons we are who we are and how we do things at 3140BSR. In my thirty years in education, I have been at five different buildings before opening Olentangy Berlin in 2017. I had great experiences at those other buildings, but Berlin is a special, special place. It is this way because of everything that WE do together as a family. However, if we start to falter or ignore any of the expectations or wonderful things we do at Berlin, then we become "just" another high school. ALL of us have worked too hard to let any of that happen. True to form, the reminder message was very well received, and I know our Bears are proud of what WE have built and will continue to uphold all our expectations.

Last, I would encourage all of you to make sure that you are keeping up to speed with all things Berlin. I would ask that you follow our building's official Instagram page (Olentangy Berlin High School) and see all the important things our Bears are doing in and around Berlin!!  It is also a fantastic way to connect with other groups, clubs, and activities Instagram sites.

That is all for now. Please continue to reach out with any questions you might have, and check the list of upcoming dates, times, and activities below.

December 5- Homebase Bell Schedule

December 8,9,10- The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe Performances

December 15, 18, 19- Exams

Hello Bear Families,

It was another great week here at Berlin!  We had a successful workforce presentation from outside work businesses, a multi-cultural festival, and a well-run safety drill that kept all our Bears up to speed. On Wednesday, we inducted 168 new members into our National Honor Society. We also ended the week with a fall sports, band, and cheer pep rally where students were recognized and celebrated. We are so proud of all the students’ accomplishments. We are truly living up to the Bear Belief Statement!!

Hello Bear Families -

What a great week at 3140BSR! Obviously, we had TONS of academic endeavors all week long, and as always, we continue to have events after school and into the night at Berlin. When people drive by our building seven days a week and then text or call me asking why the parking lot is always full, I let them know that it could be one of a hundred things our students are involved in. We truly are extremely fortunate to have such an involved Bear student body.

With that said, we started the day today with a powerful Veterans Day breakfast, assembly, and sixth annual Veterans Day parade. Our guest speaker for today was Sgt. Jason Thomas. Sgt. Thomas, a hero whose rescue efforts in New York after the terrorist attacks on 9/11 have been recounted in the movie World Trade Center and in the National Geographic documentary “9/11: One Day in America.” Sgt. Thomas served in the Marine Corps from 1996-2001. After his heroism on 9/11, and after seeing all those in need of medical attention that day, he decided to continue his service in the Air Force and is now a trained combat medic.

He was born and raised in Long Island, NY. He incidentally, as a high school senior, attended his prom on the 106th Floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. A few years later, on September 11, 2001, he would return there to help rescue people trapped in the rubble of the Twin Towers, including two police officers as depicted in the movie.  Sgt. Thomas now lives in Columbus. He is a senior bailiff at the Supreme Court of Ohio, where he is recognized for his professionalism and kindness.

Thank you to Sgt. Thomas for sharing his time and story with us and thank you to all Veterans who so bravely served so that we can live free.

Below are a few reminders of upcoming dates, times, and events in and around Berlin. Some that I would like to highlight would be our football game tonight at Westerville Central at 7:00pm. We are one of only sixteen division one teams in Ohio still playing football. Side note, it is only nineteen minutes away and is truly like a home game for us! Also, our traditional "Under the Lights" band show is on Saturday at 3:00pm and 7:00pm, and then again on Sunday at 3:00pm. If you have never attended, it really is amazing! Our students are so talented.

BerlinBands

Last, I would like to highlight our senior timeline which is linked below. If you have a senior student, please take a few minutes, and review the timeline.  If you have questions, please talk with your student, or call the building.

We have had another great week at 3140BSR!!  There is so much to celebrate and be proud of at Berlin! Students and staff are working hard to make this the best quarter/semester yet. With that said, we have many events on the horizon at Berlin, and I want to highlight a few things. I would encourage all of you to follow our Twitter and Instagram sites, as well as keep up to speed on our website.

Hello Bear Families,

Another great week at 3140BSR!  We continue to stay busy on all fronts, but that is the thing about high school, there is always something to do and here at Berlin, it is 99% of the time both positive and productive. With that said, I wanted to give some shout-outs and then also send upcoming information about things happening in and around Berlin.

A huge congratulations to all our athletic programs as many of them have wrapped up successful seasons, and others continue to compete for the Double Blue. We currently have members of our cross-country team still running this Saturday, as well as both our boys’ and girls’ soccer teams and our football team preparing to compete. Our athletic website and social media sites have all the information you will need, but you may find ticket information for events using the following link: OHSAA Tickets

A shout-out to the Pride of the Bears, the BERLIN BEAR MARCHING BAND! We have enjoyed football Friday nights, 12th period on Fridays, pep rallies, pumpkin shows, Under the Lights, parades, and more. The band is always knocking it out of the park! Thanks to Mr. Reeves and all our talented band members for making great music and keeping us entertained every step of the way! CLAWSUP BAND!!

Another shout-out to our cheer team as they will compete this weekend at 3140BSR. All the information can be found using this link: UCA Regional Competitions

Here are good reminders for everyone. Please remember that Olentangy Berlin is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) building. As we continue to move into the world of online testing, as well as work to prepare our students for life after Berlin, we would encourage all of you to have your students bring their laptop or Chromebook to school with them. While we do have Chromebook carts, we have found that most students prefer to use their own devices.

Additionally, we want to share our most recent and updated "Senior Timeline" with all of you. Please know that we will work to add and update when we can, but this is a great working document and one that will help seniors stay on track. Path to Graduation

Last, now that we are in the second quarter of the school year, I would like to continue to encourage all of you to remind your students that making an academic push now can make all the difference. When the weather starts to get a little colder and the sun goes down earlier in the day, this can impact attitudes and academic drive. It happens to all of us. So, those extra words of encouragement can and do have influence. I can promise you that we will continue to do the same here at Berlin.

Here are upcoming dates, times, and activities:

October 27- Report Cards Available

November 10- Veterans Day Celebration

November 10-12- Under the Lights 7-9pm

November 22-24 Thanksgiving Break- No School

November 27- Staff PD- No School

That is all for now. I appreciate all your support, and please always remember.... Berlin Pride.....It's Forever!

Hello Bear Families,

It was a short week, but a great week! As I am always all over 3140BSR walking the building and popping in and out of classes making sure all is well, I continue to be impressed with our students and staff and the ability to FINISH STRONG around the end of quarters and semesters. We truly do have a lot of fun together at Berlin. In the academic realm, when it comes to working and getting things done, the Bears take care of business.

With that said, in addition to the great academic work being done, we also had some great things happen outside of academics this past weekend and week. Our theater program put on three great dinner theater performances, and each of them sold out! Congratulations to everyone involved! Additionally, our orchestra took us to Disney through a wonderful light show and performance this past week. Wow, the musicality was amazing. Outside of our performing arts department, our athletic department continues to impress as we have advanced in boys' and girls' soccer as well as girls’ volleyball. It has been a tremendous effort on all fronts. We have moved forward in other sports as well, so please check the social media sites and the athletic websites for additional information. We wrapped up field hockey this week. Soccer played last night, cross country is running this weekend. Football is playing tonight, and on and on.... We appreciate and support all programs, so I would encourage you to come out and check out our Bears!

Last, we have a new quarter approaching, and with that, tons of new opportunities to start fresh and really hit the ground running. Please continue to remind your students to give 100% and ask questions if they need help. We are all here for them.

Thank you for all your continued support for all our Bears and reach out if you have questions or comments.

Below is a list of dates and times of upcoming events, activities, and information.

Hello Bear Families,

It has been a busy but a great week! We ended the weekend with a wonderful choir concert that packed our auditorium. Everyone in attendance was really impressed with the musicality of our high school students, as well as those from the middle school that joined us at the end. In addition, we have played most of our senior night contests in athletics this past week, and we are looking forward to tournament time! Yesterday after school, our SACA group held and orchestrated a panel discussion that was very well received. What an educational way to spend a Thursday afternoon. Last, our theater department has been preparing for the last couple of months for the Mystery Dinner Theater performance. I have been able to catch a few minutes of rehearsal each day, and this is going to be one for the books! All information about the performance times can be found here.

As we get closer to the end of the quarter, I wanted to send a few reminders out to everyone. Please continue to communicate with your students' teachers if there are any questions or concerns. I constantly remind all of our teachers to do the same. We all are in this together, and the success triangle must have parents/ teachers/students all communicating. I am a big believer in over-communication. Also, we work hard at Berlin to be good neighbors to those that live close to the building.  If you could remind your students if they drive to and from school, that they need to be extra cautious and careful around the high school. It is a busy parking lot, and the surrounding roads are filled with other high school aged drivers, so always allow for extra time. In addition to that, please remind your students that if they walk home, they should not be cutting through neighbors' yards. While this is not under my control, I want to do my best by helping to continue to spread the word. Last, our Berlin Bear Belief statement speaks of trust, honesty, inclusiveness and among other things, respect. Please thank your student for upholding these principles in and around Berlin. After almost thirty years in public education, this group of 1,800 might be the best I have seen.

Please look at the list of upcoming activities and events:

October 14-15- Dinner Theatre Performance

October 18-19- No School

October 24- Homebase Schedule

October 26- PSAT

October 31-Student of the Month Ceremony

Thanks again for all your continued support.

Hello Bear Families,

We had a great week at Berlin! I want to give everyone a rundown of some of the things happening in and around 3140BSR!

First, we had a wonderful "optional" freshman parent meeting after our parent/teacher conferences last night. Our student services team really did a nice job sharing important FAQs and other information. Way to go team! Also, we had a fantastic BridgEd workforce meeting on Wednesday night. We had staff from the Wexner Medical Center, Forge Bio, Worthington Industries and Kokosing Construction. It was both interesting and informative.

In addition, we also had great days instructionally during the day. All our students and teachers are really in the swing of things and ready to hit the last couple of weeks of the quarter which ends October 18th, "head on."

That said, we will continue to do things shoulder to shoulder and make this the best building it can be, and we appreciate the support you give us daily.

Please look at the dates and times of activities that are on the horizon!

October 11- Picture retakes grades 9-11

October 11- Parent Teacher Conferences 330-7pm

October 19-20-NO SCHOOL

October 24- Homebase Schedule

Hello Bear Families,

We had another great week here at 3140BSR! I have a few items I want to review and mention in this principal's message and in the Bear Tracks.

First, I want to thank everyone for a great homecoming spirit week. Wow!! What a fast-paced but very positive and exciting week for everyone at Berlin. The spirit theme days were fun and had great participation. Each day made me smile a little more than the last. Also, the bonfire and powder puff games were very well attended. Last, the big win vs cross-town rival Olentangy High School capped off the last of 3 W's vs the other Olentangy  high schools. This is no small accomplishment since the other schools have an exceptionally good history of winning in the OCC. Not only did our football team win that night, but I believe our student section, our cheerleaders, and our band represented themselves very well. We all celebrated Friday together with a great turnout and successful homecoming dance. Special shout-out to Steve Kline for making the lights, sound, and atmosphere one that you would find at a Hollywood event. It truly was the best of the best!

Ok, here we go. This is a reminder that OBHS is a "Bring Your Own Device" building. We encourage our students to bring their laptops and Chromebooks if they have them. While most students do not use lockers, we certainly have them for every student if they want to leave their Chromebook or laptop in a locker while at lunch, etc. Or, better yet, most backpacks have a compartment for technology, and they can carry their personal device from class to class. While we do have Chromebook carts, these are truly meant to supplement the students’ devices since most students already bring them to school. This message is just a reminder that we are a BYOD building and want to encourage this to continue.

Speaking of technology, please remind your students to use technology and social media for effective communication and nothing negative or hurtful. Social media and the internet are a great way to connect and be entertained and enlightened, but it is also very dangerous. Please help us reiterate that message and make sure they understand the ramifications of social media and technology misuse. Thank you.

Next, I would encourage you to continue to check PowerSchool, communicate with your student and your student's teachers regarding academics, or any other items you have questions about at OBHS. As you know, all of us need to be working together in the triangle (parents, teachers, students) for the high school experience to be a complete success. So, just a reminder about constant communication and keeping that open. Thank you!

On October 5th, we are holding our first parent/teacher conference night from 3:30-7:00pm. At 7:00pm in the auditorium is our freshman parent meeting. We encourage all freshman parents to attend, and please use this link so we can tailor the presentation for everyone in attendance.

Last, our district has a BridgED program where businesses and corporations, such as, but not limited to Elford Construction, Wexner Medical Center, and Worthington Industries collaborate with our schools to help high school students get a leg up on a career path through a variety of different avenues and opportunities. This will be a great workshop and information night next week. This is open to all parents and students. Trust me, it will be worth an hour to hear what is available.

State of the Workforce

Thank you and once again, I appreciate all your continued support and efforts to continue to make OBHS a great place to be!

Hello Bear Families,

Spirit week has been a lot of fun!! However, it is not over. We have a big game tonight as well as a dance tomorrow night! A couple of quick reminders:

Remind your students to wear white for the “white out” theme. Also, be early, have a positive attitude, and be ready to get loud! In addition, remind them that being a part of a great school and the opportunity to be a part of these things (pep rallies, bonfires, football games, dances, etc.) are privileges, and they should not be taken for granted. With that said, the expectation is that we are at the game and the dance to have fun the right way. Anything else could result in removal from the activity and/or discipline. We want to have fun, but it needs to be done the right way.

Last, please remind your students to make good decisions at the events, while driving, riding as a passenger, and before and after the game and dance. We want to see everyone back at 3140BSR on Monday sharing good stories and everyone coming together happy and healthy.

Thank you for your constant support.

Hello Bear Parents,

I hope all is well. Wow, what an exciting week at 3140BSR. Homecoming week and everything surrounding the week is all about making memories for current students, and welcoming back graduates that come back for the events as well. Personally, speaking as the dad of a 2020 Bear graduate, I know that my son is excited and plans to be back for the football game cheering on the Double Blue.

With that said, I want to go over the list of events planned, as well as reiterate expectations that were shared with all grade levels in all class meetings so that everyone is on the same page. The success triangle (parents/students/staff) needs to be in play so that parents, students, and staff are all working together. I have reminded our entire student body over the announcements today and will remind them again at the pep rally on Friday, that this week is all about being a Bear. Also, it is all about doing things the right way and safely having fun together as a building. All the events that we have planned and put together are privileges and should be treated as such. I know that I can count on you to remind your student of these expectations as well.

Here is the list of events that pertain to Homecoming week:

Spirit week:

Tuesday - Comfy day (big success!)

Wednesday

9th and 10th wear white

11th and 12th wear pink

Powderpuff game at 7:00pm - canned food or cash donation to get in.

Thursday - Neon Day –

7pm boys’ soccer game- then bonfire will start behind stadium immediately after the game. It is an awesome event including the band, cheerleaders, and tons of fun (lasts around 30-45 min). Some of our best pictures from the last six years have occurred at the bonfire.

Friday – Double Blue Friday and afternoon pep rally

5:30pm Homecoming parade

7:00pm Football game - BEAT TANGY

Saturday - Dance - 8-11pm. Students will not be allowed to enter after 9:30pm (no exceptions).

Once again, we want all our BEARS to have fun, be safe, and enjoy making memories during homecoming week. However, they need to do it the right way and uphold the expectations. I appreciate you supporting all of this and having those conversations with your student.

Thank you for your continued support.

Dear Bear Families,

We have come to the end of another wonderful week at 3140 Berlin Station Rd. I want to send a few quick messages and then end this email with some dates and times of upcoming events and activities.

First, we had great all-grade level meetings this week. In the ninth-grade meeting, we discussed expectations, traditions, and how to be successful in high school. In the sophomore meeting, we discussed more of the same but added that we now needed them to continue to be leaders as they were no longer new to the building and the expectation was that they would continue to challenge themselves, academically, athletically, and with extracurricular activities. The junior meeting discussed college opportunities, life after high school, and how they can prepare for both of those things now that they are halfway through their academic career. We showed them tips, tools, and strategies that would help them navigate through their junior year and beyond. The senior meeting focused on transcripts, letters of reference, preparing for life after high school, and reminded them that they truly needed to make this the best year of high school. They needed to make sure that they did everything they could to leave their mark positively at Olentangy Berlin High School. The meetings discussed so much more, but that was the overview, and our student services team did a fantastic job of going through all the information. Everything we discussed at the meetings can be found on the Schoology page.

Second, I want to make sure all student drivers have their parking permits. Starting next week, we will be calling home and then also pulling students out of class to let them know they need to purchase a parking permit. We are doing this for safety reasons. Please let me know if there are any questions.

Last, fall homecoming is on the horizon. We want all students to enjoy a great homecoming experience. We will have spirit week, bonfires, pep rallies, a dance, a football game, and more. However, unless we set our expectations, those will not be as successful, so we need everybody to be on the same page. We have never had an issue at Berlin High School and do not expect anything other than great, but I always want to make sure that everyone understands our expectations.

With that said, I appreciate all the support and positive interactions with the Berlin community, and I look forward to seeing you soon. Please look at the upcoming dates, times, and activities listed below.

Dear Bear Families-

We had another great week at Berlin!

I wanted to let you know that academics are in full swing. Most classes are taking pre-assessments, working in groups, reviewing material from past classes, and getting in step with each other to make this another awesome academic year!

On Tuesday, the whole building went on a HOMEBASE schedule. Our student leadership team (CLAWTEAM) went into all 9th grade classes and talked about groups, clubs, activities and all of the opportunities available here at Berlin. They also talked about "how we do things" at 3140BSR, and how important our Bear Belief Statement is to each of us. With that said, the 10th, 11th and 12th grade homebase classes talked about inclusiveness, trust, honesty, and treating each other how we want to be treated at Berlin. They also worked on building relationships with other students and teachers. It really was a great day!

Speaking of groups, clubs and activities, all of those can be found here:

 Clubs and Activities

Athletically, our student athletes are working to build on the teamwork that they built over the summer to carry through the season to translate into wins!! If you haven't seen a game or contest, I would suggest you come out and check out the DOUBLE BLUE sometime soon!

Last, our art and music students have been singing, drawing, taking pictures, making great music, and everything in between. We have such talented bears and they have really risen to the challenge of making Berlin great!!

Thank you for your continued support, and I would ask that you follow us on the building Twitter page (@todd_spinner) and Instagram (@olentangyberlinhigh) to stay informed on everything happening at 3140BSR!

Upcoming Dates:

September 4: No School

Dear Bear families,

Thank you so much for a great week. Your students have really done a nice job acclimating back to being at 3140BSR all day long and having fun together, working together, and really doing things shoulder to shoulder!  Also, curriculum night and our senior parent night were fantastic!  We had our largest attendance rate by far in the six years since we have been open!

With that said, we are on to week two at Berlin. A few reminders before I wrap up.

First, please make sure that if your students drive to school, they have a parking permit. We will start to call students down the week after next if they do not have a permit. This is a safety concern, as we have to know who is in our parking lot.

Second, we appreciate the support with the dress code. We want the focus to continue to be on academics and not on anything else. So, while we have had to hand out a few shirts and make a few parent calls, overall, it has been great!

Last, I would encourage you to scan our website and the district website for all of the upcoming dates, times, and activities available to you and your student. Please know that if you have any questions, you can always reach out to the building.

Thank you for all of your continued support
