Principal's Message
Berlin High School

November 22, 2022

Bears -

The last couple of weeks have been busy, but that is expected as we continue to do great things at Berlin!  As we get ready to leave 3140BSR for a 6-day Thanksgiving break, I want to thank all of you for your support, communication and collaboration since the year began.  The success of Berlin high school is not possible without all 3 parts (Parents, students, staff) working together for a common goal.  So, thank you!

With that being said, I wanted to put a few things on the radar so that everyone is in the loop and you have all of the information you need to help your student be successful here at Berlin!

This is the link to our exam schedule.  For our returning students, it is already understood that students need to be in the exam room at the time that they are supposed to be there.  For our first year Bears, please remember that this is not like middle school.  So, once again, all students need to be in their exam room at the time that they are supposed to take the exam.  If for some reason, a student is not able to be in the exam at the specified time, which should have already been worked out and communicated to the teacher and the attendance office way ahead of time.  If you have any questions, students should ask their teachers.  Thank you in advance for allowing us and your student to have a smooth exam week.  There have never been issues in the past with this expectation, we know it will be smooth again this year!

Our school calendar on the Berlin website is a great resource for all parents.  We try as hard as we can to communicate all Homebase schedules and adjustments to our calendar.  We use our Instagram sites, our Twitter sites, the Bear Tracks Newsletter, morning announcements, the building website, TVs around the building and other resources. However, if you have any questions about adjustments or upcoming events, please reach out to the building.  We want everyone to be on the same page.  For example, we have a home-based schedule on 11/30/22.

Also, please know that we love to see our alumni Bears, but we would like to see them after 2:35pm and at events and activities.  If they are home from college or just in the area, we would appreciate if they did not come up to the building during the school day.  As we get larger and gain more and more alumni, we just do not have the forum to allow them to come in and out of the building during the day as we are working hard to prepare current students to be successful alumni.  Thank you for passing this along to graduated Bears!

Last, please continue to come up and experience all things Berlin.  We have Performing and Visual Arts presentations on the horizon, sports activities, concerts and many other things we would love for all of you to experience.  Please check the Performing Arts and Visual Arts social media sites, the Athletic website as well as the building calendars for dates and times of upcoming activities and events.  Also, it is always better to attend wearing something that is Double-Blue...  So, make sure that you check out the school store to get the latest and greatest double-blue attire for the holidays!

That is all for now, I hope you have a great break, and I look forward to seeing everyone back in the building on Tuesday the 29th!  Happy Thanksgiving!

Remember, Berlin Pride....It's Forever!

Bear Families -

The start of another great week at 3140BSR!  I just wanted to send a recap of last week, as well as some updates and a look ahead to what is on the horizon.  As always, please continue to check the building website, Twitter and Instagram pages for all things Doubleblue!

Last week we had our Orchestra concert, and I continue to be amazed, but not surprised by the musicality of our Bears.  They are a very talented group of young adults and every song seemed to be better than the one before!  In fact, on Friday morning, they joined us again in front of Student Services and played for 15-20 minutes as students walked to class.  What a special treat by a great group of students.

In addition, our girls' soccer team won 2 contests and will play tonight in the Regional semi-finals vs Orange high school at 7:00pm at Big Walnut higih school.  Bif Walnut high school is only about 15 minutes from OBHS.  Wouldn't it be great if we packed the bleachers?  Tickets for all playoff games can only be purchased online at OHSAA.org/tickets

This is the same site that you can find and purchase your tickets for our Football game Friday night against Perrysburg high school.  The athletic department has set up a Spirit Bus for our students and information can be found on Schoology.  The deadline for the Spirit Bus permission form is tomorrow by the end of the school day, so please act fast!!

Our Band sure has had a great run during halftimes of games, as well as at the Circleville Pumpkin Show, Ohio University, and several other performance sites.  They continue to impress me and put on collegiate level shows.  That is why they are the "Pride of the Bears!"

Our district has a communication platform that they continue to use and send out surveys entitled "POSSIP".  There have been 4-5 "pulse checks" this year, and 95-98% of what is coming back to Berlin is positive.  There are some responses that constructively give suggestions and ideas, and I will continue to work through those individually as well as comprehensively.  However, I would always encourage you to reach out to me directly if you feel it is a concern that you would like to discuss.  With all of the responses coming back, I would hate to miss anything that you would like an answer to, as I am always happy to speak with you.  I work hard to be easily accessible.

Todd_spinner@olsd.us is my email, and the phone number to the building is 740-657-5900.  In addition, I am at most, if not all events and activities, please do not hesitate to ask me questions if you would like to discuss something of importance.

I would like to finish by thanking all of you for your continued support and communication when it comes to all things Berlin.  This is a special place, and in order for it to keep moving in the right direction and building on the great culture and climate, we all need to continue working together and communicate.  I will leave you with a list of upcoming dates, times and activities for the next month or so.

November 11: Veteran's Day Celebraton November 11: Homebase Bell Schedule November 16: NHS Induction Ceremony November 18: DACC application's open November 21: DACC fieldtrip November 22: Senior Thanksgiving November 23: No School November 24-25: No School November 28: No School November 30: Senior Yearbook Photos November 30: Homebase Bell Schedule

Bears -

I just wanted to touch base with all of you regarding things happening in and around OBHS.  This has been a shortened week in school due to the PSAT test as well as today's COTA professional day, but as you know, we still have a lot of great things going on in classes as well as with our athletic programs and Performing Arts department.

Our Theater department just put a wrap on a wonderful PANDEMONIUM play!  The cast and crew worked nonstop to make sure that behind the scenes, up in the booth, on stage and everywhere in between was fantastic for everyone in attendance.  What a special 3 days of theatrical magic!  Congratulations to everyone involved!  Athletically, our teams our wrapping up great seasons or in the middle of playoff runs.  We had a tennis player and a golfer make great playoff runs.  A couple other great example out of many that I could use would be our lady bears soccer team.  They are the number 1 seed, 14-1, heading into tournament play. Our volleyball team celebrated senior night last night, and our football team plays tonight at 3140BSR.

Switching gears, our Performing Arts department has a BASS Day coming up in our choir classes.  The BGSU men's chorus will be making an appearance at the building and Mr. Sribanditmongkol will be conducting our tenors and basses along with the men's chorus from BGSU.  How exciting!

As all of you know, we did not have school today or Monday, and the next 9-weeks starts on Tuesday.  As we do constantly here at Berlin, please remind your student that Academics is always the focus.  All of the other activities (spirit week, theater, sports, pep-rallies, etc.) are great, but academics are the key.  If there is something that they need to read, review, study, or prepare for over the 4-day weekend, please encourage them to do that and be as ready as possible for Tuesday back in the building.

Speaking of being back in the building, we have a special presentation from a new school community partner, BridgED that will be here on October 19th presenting a panel presentation starting at 7:00 pm.  The invitation is attached and should be a very informative night for everyone in attendance.  The presentation is geared towards our parents, but we will have several staff members in attendance, and students are 100% invited to attend.  We will have plenty of room!   The State of Central Ohio Workforce

Last, I have once again placed our Berlin Bear Belief statement below as a reminder of how important that is to all of us here at Berlin high school.  This is a special place with great students, faculty and staff members, and we will continue to do everything we can make to continue to make this a great high school experience for everyone in the OBHS community!

Members of the Bear Family come from all walks of life and have many diverse backgrounds.  We believe that the Berlin High School community should stand shoulder to shoulder as we practice, value and honor diversity, trust, a positive culture and climate, inclusiveness and respect for others.  Any behavior that contradicts the Bear Family beliefs is not acceptable.  Always remember to represent the double-blue in a positive way.

Thank you for your continued support and remember...  Berlin Pride....It's Forever!

Hello Bear Families,

I wanted to take a few minutes and continue to update everyone on some upcoming dates and calendar items.  Also, please know that if you ever want to take a look at upcoming dates and activities, these dates along with many others are on our school website or 3140news.com for your planning purposes.

This Wednesday, October 12th is OBHS' PSAT testing day.  All Sophomores and Juniors that have registered to take the PSAT should report to their assigned room by 7:20 am.  No different than a normal school day, students will wait in the commons, the bell will ring at 7:10 am to head to class and testing will begin promptly at 7:20 am.  Room assignments have been posted outside the Main Office and Student Services.  Be sure to bring sharpened #2 pencils and an approved calculator with you!  All buses, including DACC buses, will run on their typical schedule.

Any student grades 9-12 who has NOT registered for the PSAT will have an at-home workday on Wednesday, October 12th and does not need to report to the building.

Also, on Friday, October 14th students will not have school due to (COTA) Central Ohio Teacher's Association professional development day.

Last, on Monday, October 17th, OLSD has a teacher workday so that they are able to finalize first quarter grades.  This day is also not a school day for students.

That is all for now, but as always, I just want to make sure that everyone is looped in.

Bear Families -

Another great week has come and gone here at 3140BSR!  As always, I want to make sure that I am letting everyone know about all of the great things happening in and around Berlin.  We had a fantastic Spirit week last week and we worked hard to put pics on both the Instagram page and the Twitter pages.  The Football game was a big success as well with not only our team winning, but also the cheerleaders, band and student section leaders doing great things as well.  Speaking of our student section, I continue to make announcements and remind our students to lead by example, cheer for us and not against the other team, and treat others, as you would like to be treated.  No different from in the halls, classes, student section, and pep rallies or any other place, this has to be the way.  We refer to the Bear Belief Statement all of the time, and reference this as it is posted in every classroom and in other places around the building on 20, 4ft x 6ft signs.  The Bear Belief Statement reads:

Members of the Bear Family come from all walks of life and have many diverse backgrounds.  We believe that the Berlin High School community should stand shoulder to shoulder as we practice, value and honor diversity, trust, a positive culture and climate, inclusiveness and respect for others.  Any behavior that contradicts the Bear Family beliefs is not acceptable.  Always remember to represent the double-blue in a positive way.

I say this, because these are not just words on a sign, but things that the family believes in.  We work hard to uphold the Bear Belief Statement and will continue to do so moving forward.  If there are instances where this is not the case (halls, class, student section, sporting events), please remind your student that they should let a teacher, administrator or a faculty member know.  We are all over and all around.  In fact, at the football games, we have 3 Assistant Principals and the SRO up in the bleachers.  In addition, I am standing right in front of the Double Blue section.  We have done this at every home game for last 5 years and will continue to do so.

Our HOCO dance was a great success as well.  We had well over 900 Students in attendance, and all on the floor.  The Bears had a blast!   I was very proud of the whole evening.

Another item I wanted to mention was our districts relationship with BridgED.  This is an opportunity for major corporations to not only have professional relationships with the district and buildings, but with the community, parents and students as well.  We will be holding an informational parent night with BridgED on October 19, 2022.   View the event flyer for more information.

Last, I would like to give some special attention to our Theater Department.  Mrs. Gibbons and the students have put together a fantastic show called Pandemonium, and there are still two chances to see it.  Saturday at 8:00pm, or Sunday at 2:00pm.  Pandemonium Tickets and Information

That is all for now.  Just a reminder, the first quarter ends on Thursday, October 13th, and we encourage all Bears to FINISH STRONG!!

Bear families -

Happy Friday!  Wow, what a great week and it looks like we are all set up to have a great Friday night and weekend!

Thank you to our Student council advisors Mrs. Shulack and Mrs. Lane for organizing (with our leadership students) a fantastic spirit week and Homecoming pep rally and Court announcement.  A lot of time and effort goes into planning, but it is so worth it for all of our Bears to have a great Homecoming week experience!!

I do have a couple of items to add in addition to Homecoming messages, but that is the main focus this week and weekend.  Here are the bullet points for those other items:

  • The district is installing a few cement girders in front of the entrances at Berlin and other buildings.  Many schools in Ohio are having these installed for safety reasons.  We want to do everything we can to make sure that our entrances are not approachable in a vehicle.  Just wanted to bring this to your attention.

  • Our Performing arts boosters are looking for additional volunteers for upcoming sport contests.  If you are able to help out, please contact the FBPA.

  • All students should now have parking permits if they are parking on the property.  If they do not have a permit, we have given the name and plate number to our SRO, Deputy Gaines, and he is calling students down and calling parents about not being able to drive to Berlin and park on the property any longer.  If you have questions or need any help with this, please let me know.  This is 100% a safety issue.

  • If your student is a senior, please make sure that they have signed up for a senior yearbook portrait on October 10th by visiting 3140news.com.  In addition, all graduation forms are due by December 1, 2022.  Please visit the Class of 2023 website for this extremely important information.

That is all for now.  Once again, a great week and great participation from our Bears all the way around.  If you have not seen all of the pictures on Twitter or Instagram, you might want to take a look.  A lot of memories were made!  Let's finish strong with a great pep rally, football game, band show, cross country meet, dance, etc. ðŸ˜‰ As I stated in my last email, 8-11:00pm should be safe, fun and very similar to a wedding reception.  I need your help and support with relaying this message.  I ran the numbers in my head the other night during halftime of a soccer game. This will be my 70th high school dance (2 a year, but for 14 of those years we had winter formals or Halloween dances, etc...) that I have attended as either a teacher or an administrator.  They are a lot of fun when they are run the right way.  We do it the right way at Berlin high school.  I will let the whole student body know, but if you remind them too, we are all good!

That is all for now... Have a great weekend, thank you for all of your support and remember, Berlin Pride... It's Forever!

Bears - Well, another great week at Berlin!  As I look back over this past week, I think about classes and events I attended, and I think about the following:

  • Composition classes having great discussions in the Overlook!

  • Our wonderful student services team holding a "senior seminar" in the commons for all seniors.  Q and A, help with letters of recommendation, one-on-one guidance, and a whole lot more!

  • Our Bear's Den selling the Red, White, and Blue themed shirts for military night!  Hopefully, there will be shirts available at the game as well!

  • Our lady Bears soccer team beating the Division 1 5th ranked team in the state... Wow, the team is playing together and as a family!

  • Our lady Bears tennis team continuing to compete!

  • Our Field Hockey team beating a very good CSG team!

  • Students taking advantage of our AWESOME media center and utilizing our Media Center specialist Ms. Starcher!  What a great resource!

  • Our FB team winning on the road and our Band and Cheerleaders and Student Section supporting the whole way!
  • Senior class officers, student council and all kinds of groups, clubs and activities meeting before and after school all working together to help Berlin become an even better place to be!

  • Science using pickles in lab experiments - pretty cool!

  • Our women's chorus sounding as if they are already 4 months into the year and not 4 weeks!

There are certainly things that I did not list, but you get the idea.  We are really doing wonderful things here at 3140BSR, and please know that all of them are important.  Just as we get excited about the football team winning, we also cheer for our theater students, our students taking rigorous courses, and those students just doing great things all the way around!  Berlin is not America's Most Spirited High School for one thing, it is for everything that we do, academically, athletically and in all areas.

With that being said, we have a lot of things on the horizon, but here are 3 things I wanted to draw attention to as we get rolling into the second week of September.

First, I want to remind everyone that if a student parks in our parking lot, they must have a Berlin hang tag.  This is for safety and security reasons.  We simply must know who is on our property during school hours.  We have announced this every day since we have been back in the building, and we are now placing reminders out on cars.  Once we have walked the lot and have a list of cars without permits, we will move to the next step.  Please have your student get a parking permit so they do not have to come down to the office during class or a practice after school etc...  The goal is 100% safety in this instance.  Thank you!

Next, our district office has implemented a new survey response platform for parents called POSSIP.  It is another way for parents to reach out and touch base about any items they would like to address or have questions about.  I continue to sift through all of the comments and questions, but I would still encourage you to email me directly if you have a concern or something that you would like to discuss with me.  We have had a lot of survey responses, and I do not want to ignore anyone, as I believe in always over communicating.  To me, everyone's input is important.  My email address is todd_spinner@olsd.us.  Thank you!

Last, our Homecoming week is quickly approaching.  What a great time for any High School student. Homecoming is not just about the game; it is about students enjoying fellow students.  It is about wearing the theme for the day in spirit week.  It is about the bonfire.  It is about the Homecoming pep rally.  It is about the dance. It is about the Homecoming court.  It is about hearing the band in the hallways and at the game.  So, while the game is BIG, it is everything that surrounds the week and Bears coming together as Bears that makes it special.  There will be more specific information to come, but in the dates below, you will find some information about Homecoming week that I wanted you to have on the radar.

With that being said, here are a list of dates, times and activities that you should have on your calendar.

September 13: Homebase Bell Schedule
September 19: No School, Professional Development for teachers
September 26: Homecoming Spirit Week
September 27: HRimaging, Picture Re-takes
September 27: Powder Puff Games
September 28: Parent/Teacher Conferences, Sign-ups coming soon
September 30: Pep Rally Bell Schedule
September 30: OBHS Alumni Homecoming gathering
October 1: Homecoming Dance

That is all for now.  Thank you for all of your constant support and please remember...Berlin Pride... It's Forever!

Bears -

I hope all is well and you had a great week!  As always, I wanted to just send out a note of things that happened this past week, as well as a look ahead to dates and activities to come.

Along with our Student Services Team, I was able to hold 4 GREAT all-class meetings this week.  Each meeting was very informative but was tailored to that class and the year ahead.  Here is a breakdown of what was discussed with each grade level, all presentations can be found in each grade level Schoology course as well.

9th grade meeting - Expectations, Traditions, Academics, Frequently asked questions were answered, Bear Belief Statement was covered, class t-shirts were handed out and the class of 2026 banner was signed by all students.

10th grade meeting - Same things from the 9th grade meeting, but we focused more on state testing as well as increasing your involvement as leaders at Berlin.

11th grade meeting - Leadership and really starting to think about ACT exam and next steps after high school.

12th grade meeting - Continuing to lead by example as well as focusing on dates, letters of recommendation, times frames and due dates as we start to get going this year.  I reminded them that while we want parents to be involved, it is their senior year and they should be leading the charge if they have questions, etc...

With all of that said, they were all very good meetings, and everyone was on point.  Once again, these PowerPoints from the meetings can be found on Schoology.

Also, I wanted to share with all of you that the District has started a new online feedback program called POSSIP.  In just a little over 2 weeks, Berlin has had almost 640 responses.  While I am working hard to figure out the best way to respond and sift through all of the responses, feedback and comments, it will take some time.  So, if you have something that needs my direct attention, please do not hesitate to call or email me directly.  In addition to that, please know that all comments will be reviewed.  Thank you for being so involved.

That is all for this week, and do not hesitate as I said, to reach out with questions or concerns.

Bears -

I just wanted to send out a quick note to remind you of a couple of things happening this week and to also thank all of you for a great first week of school.  The 1,700 students in the building have really worked hard to make this a special opening week and I know it is going to be a great school year.  America's Most Spirited High School is back together again!

Tomorrow, Tuesday, August 30th, is our first Homebase Bell Schedule of the year.    We have made announcements and also posted on social media and around the building, but I wanted to make sure you have the information too.  Our Junior and Senior ClawTeam leaders will be in the Freshman Homebases talking about the first weeks of school and touching base with the 9th-grade students to answer any questions they might have.  Our other Homebase rooms will be discussing the Bear Belief Statement and ways to continue to make Berlin high school a great place to be. Students who have not received a student ID yet this year will receive their ID's in Homebase as well. Students will use ID's this year to sign-in and out of the building during the school day, enter into school dances and for college and career readiness exams.

On Thursday, September 1st, all students will have all-class meetings.  Each meeting will focus on grade specific items.  Our Freshman and Senior meetings will take the whole class period, and the sophomore and junior meetings will last 20 minutes or so.  The Freshman class will sign the Class of 2026 banner and receive the class of 2026 T-Shirt!

That is all for now, thank you once again for the constant and continued support of all things 3140BSR!!

Bear Families,

I wanted to send a few reminders and items so that everyone is in the loop.  I purposefully listed them in bulleted type fashion, so they are hopefully easier to navigate.

  • Curriculum Night is tomorrow, August 24th, from 6:30-8:30pm.  This is a great opportunity for you to come see the building, walk your student's schedule, meet their teachers and get information that will be helpful for everyone involved.  Please know that we will not be printing schedules for all students, so please take a screenshot or print it out, whichever works best for you.  If you happen to forget it, we will certainly help you out!  Students from our ClawTeam leadership Team will be out and about with tie-dye shirts on as well.  Please ask them for help!!

  • The Traditional Senior Parent meeting is 8:30-9:00pm is on August 24th as well.  This is an informational meeting presented by our counselors and will be a great way to get dates, times, tips, tools, strategies and other "senior related" items to help your student's senior year be as successful as possible!  If you are not able to attend, as always, we will have the presentation downloaded to the website.

  • Our HR-Imaging picture makeup day will be this Friday during all lunch periods in the auditorium.  This is for all students that may have been absent on freshman orientation day, or the back-to-school days.

The last 2 days of school have been fantastic, and that is because of our staff, students, parents and the community.  It truly takes all of us to continue to build the culture!

Bear Families -

I just wanted to wrap up a great couple of days with this addition of the Bear Tracks. Yesterday and today both started with phenomenal pep rallies and the entire Berlin family was wearing the Double-Blue!  Both days were also relationship building days, and 100% non-academic.

With that being said, it was awesome to see students getting to know each other, teachers, and all of the staff at Olentangy Berlin High School. Today's pep assembly ended with the check presentation from Varsity Brands for being America's Most Spirited High School!  This award was a reminder that our disciplined, inclusive, positive culture and climate is the key to all around success!! I am sure that if you are able to log onto Twitter, or Instagram, or many of the other social media sites you will see the enthusiasm and excitement from everyone at 3140 Berlin Station Rd.

I know that our students are looking forward to a great evening together if they are attending the football game and band show, and I would encourage you to remind them that they should not bring anything with them into the stadium but positive attitudes and the Double-Blue spirit!

I hope all of you have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing all of our BEARS back in the building on Monday morning ready to experience continued success and growth in and out of the classroom!!

August 19: Football home opener, 7:00 PM
August 24: Curriculum Night, 6:30 PM-8:30 PM
August 26: Make up picture day, during all lunch periods
September 5: No School - Labor Day
September 19: No School - Professional Development day for Teachers

Bear families,

What a fantastic opening day of school at Olentangy Berlin High School! The 3140 BSR family certainly celebrated being back home together again.

We talked about the fact that we have built such a strong, disciplined, inclusive, positive culture and climate and that definitely will be celebrated tomorrow when Varsity Brands presents the building with the $25,000 check for being named America's most spirited high school!

All of our bears were given brand-new T-shirts today, and the freshman received those same T-shirts at freshman orientation. We have asked everyone to wear that shirt tomorrow.  If they are not able to do so, wear their favorite double blue attire. Once again, today was great and tomorrow is going to be one for the books!

Clawsup, and remember Berlin Pride...Its Forever!

Bear Families -

Wow...August 12th!  We are getting closer to the 18th, the first day of school for students!  Back to school days and Freshman Orientation went off without a hitch!

A couple of notes before listing out dates, times and activities.  First, the construction that is being done on and around Berlin Station and Piatt Rds. will not be completed when we open for the school year.  So, please make sure that you chart out your course accordingly and plan on arriving a little early to the building if you are dropping off a student or two.  Please also remind your student about that as well!  As we all know, leaving 5 or 10 minutes earlier when we are leaving to go somewhere can make all the difference.

Also, for our new parents and freshman parents, please know that at the high school level, there is not an items or school supplies needed list.  Everything that your student will need for each class will be communicated by the teacher during that first full week of school.  The first 2 days of school, even though it is a regular bell schedule, will be non-academic "relationship building/getting to know the building" days.  So, week 2 will focus on the nuts and bolts of each class.

Once again, we work hard to over communicate and get you everything you need so that you and your student(s) will have a very successful experience at 3140BSR!

Ok, here we go with dates, times and activities:

August 15: Open House, 6:30 PM-9 PM
August 18: First Day of School
August 19: First Double Blue Friday, football home opener
August 24: Curriculum Night, 6:30 PM-8:30 PM
August 26: Make up picture day, during all lunch periods
September 5: No School - Labor Day
September 19: No School - Professional Development day for Teachers
September 28: Parent/Teacher Conferences
October 1: Homecoming Dance

August 11: PowerSchool opens at 8 AM

Hello BEARS,

I hope all of you have had a great summer and continue to enjoy time with family and friends. This is the first edition of Principal's Message and Bear Tracks Newsletter for the 2022-2023 school year. Please know that I work very hard to communicate with the entire Olentangy Berlin high school community, and this is one way of sharing useful, up-to-date, and valuable information. Please note that not all Bear Tracks will look the same, because there are certain times throughout the school year where we have testing, holidays, professional development days, multiple updates etc. and those Bear Tracks messages might be longer than regular ones. Once again, it is all done to over communicate information with the goal of helping our Bear students be as successful as possible!

The first order of business is to welcome all our new Bear families from the class of 2026. What an exciting time for you to be joining the Bear family! Just two months ago, the family at 3140 Berlin Station Rd. was rightfully awarded and named America's Most Spirited High School!  This award is given to only one high school in the country each year, and it is given to the high school that demonstrates many qualities that all contribute to empowering student success and elevating the overall high school student experience.  Varsity Brands, the company that hands out the award, uses several predictors and determining factors when considering all schools that complete the application process. Once the field of thousands is narrowed down to under 20 schools across the country, four finalists are chosen and then videos are made from those schools, recommendation letters are written, and visits are made to each building by Varsity Brands. In the end, the disciplined, positive, inclusive culture and climate in Olentangy Berlin high school made all the difference. All of us are so proud of this accomplishment and will continue to work to build on the great culture and climate at 3140 Berlin Station Rd.

With that being said, I want to make sure that everyone has a list of upcoming dates, times and activities so that you are all prepared for exciting and successful school year at Olentangy Berlin High School. Please know that in addition to the Bear Tracks Newsletter, we have several other ways we communicate information. We have a very informative website, a building and Main Office Twitter page, Instagram accounts, as well as daily announcements in the building. If for some reason, you are not able to get the information you were looking for from those outlets, you are always welcome to call or email the building and we would be happy to help you.

At Olentangy Berlin high school, we are proud to have a great group of teachers that lead many different groups, clubs, and activities. In fact, we have well over 65 of those, not to mention all our athletic teams and performing arts programs. One of those groups is our ClawTeam. This is our student leadership team of more than 100 juniors and seniors that applied for this leadership position and are looking forward to being positive influences on our freshman!   Their very first activity and leadership role for the school year is to help acclimate our freshman students to the building, the traditions, the positive cheers at events, and all things Double Blue!  Here is the link for the timeline and the schedule for that freshman orientation day on Friday, August 12th from 8:00 AM-12:30 PM.

On August 15, we will be holding our open house for all freshmen students and parents as well as new students and parents to the building no matter what grade level. Here are the times:

6:30 PM-Freshman student and parents and new students and parents in the auditorium

7:30 PM-pep rally (all parents and students are welcome) in the main gym

8:00-9:00 PM groups, clubs and activities fair in the commons - apparel and sign-up sheets. The Bears Den (school store) will be open!

Next, our first day of school for all our students is, Thursday, August 18th. We will be on a regular bell schedule.  The first two days will be used to reinforce all things learned and discussed on the 12th. Students will participate in pep rallies, be able to walk their schedules and get to know their teachers and students in their classes. Both days will be non-academic days, and used 100% to build relationships, add to disciplined culture and climate at Berlin and answer commonly asked questions by Bear students. These two days are fun for the whole building!!

August 11: PowerSchool opens at 8 AM
