Principal's Message 2.18.21

Good morning Bears -

I just wanted to send a quick message to touch base and remind you about a few things.

First, if you are a parent of a current 9th, 10th or 11th grade student, we have re-opened the Power School student portal so that you and your student can put in course requests.  This portal was closed, but we still have some students that have not put in requests.  So, this is the second opportunity.  Once the portal closes, we will review and then make schedules for students that still do not have requests in yet.  The hope is that we do not have to do that because our goal is for students to get the courses they want to take as oppose to getting closed out of classes because there were no requests made.

Also, I wanted to send another note about the return on March 15th.  I had a great meeting with all of our BLT (Dept Leaders) Team and we shared our excitement about having all of the Bears back together again!  Wow...as I believe I mentioned in the last Bear Tracks, we have come such a long way since our Seniors last year had to end their senior year short by almost 3 months, cancel spring sports and many, many ceremonies, and never step back into the building again.  I know all of them would have loved to be able to come back to the building for the last few months and finish the 12-year journey "together" as a Bear family.  With that being said, as excited as all of us are, we will continue to remind all students that masks, sanitizing and social distancing are the keys to remaining in the building and moving forward.   Also, we will be on a HOMEBASE schedule for the 15th.  Please make note of that adjustment.

That is all for now.  I appreciate all of the support, communication, and positive messages regarding everything happening at 3140BSR!!

Principal's Message 2.11.21

Bear Families,

As you most likely know, yesterday we found out that students will be returning to school full time beginning March 15th. This has been a long time coming and something that we are all excited about at the building level!

When we ended last school year 100% out of the building and in a virtual learning situation, none of us knew what this year would look like.  We went from not having spring sports for 2020 students to being 100% virtual for 2020 students, to hybrid at the beginning of this year in 20-21 to now back all together for all students on March 15!  I am very excited for all students, parents, and staff that we have successfully made it to this point.

With all of that said, please know that I am working shoulder to shoulder with the Bear staff family to make this the best March, April, and May that it can be within certain obvious limitations. I do ask that you TRUST that I will do so and if you have questions, reach out to me. I will tell you that for senior parents, I know there are many questions.

I have had conversations with ALL of our senior advisors and leaders, and they know that as tough as it has been, not one of them would trade coming back now for missing the last 3 months of their senior year like last year’s seniors. I am appreciative of that unselfish perspective from them and know that TOGETHER, we will control what we can control and finish strong!!

Last, here are some dates and times of upcoming activities and things I thought you might need to know.

  • Feb 12: No School, Professional Development Day for Teachers
  • Feb 15: No School, President's Day
  • Feb 18: Parent-Teacher Conferences
  • Feb 24: ACT Exam for JUNIORS ONLY (all others have a virtual learning Day)  ACT Information
  • March 15: Students return to the classroom full-time.

Thanks again for all of the support for everything at 3140BSR, and please reach out to me with any questions. and remember...Berlin Pride...It's Forever!

Hello Bears -

Well... It was a shortened week, but a great week at 3140BSR!

We were able to kick off Black History month with two great "hidden heroes" celebrations during Homebase.  Our staff and students talked about inclusiveness, a sense of belonging, and current and historical figures that have done so much to move our society forward.

In addition, our Student Services counselors with the help of ELA teachers distributed course selection material to all current 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade students.  We have sent out Tweets, Facebook information, and put info on our website about the scheduling process.  Please go to one or all for more information.  The goal is to over-communicate and provide info for all parents and students to be successful.  If you have any questions, please reach out to our Student Services dept here at Berlin.

With that being said, we look forward to a nice weekend, with the intent to come back on Monday and keep moving forward both academically as well as in every aspect of student life in and around Berlin high school.

Please see below for upcoming dates and times so you are in the loop.

  • Feb 10 & 18: Parent-Teacher Conferences
  • Feb 12: No School, Professional Development Day for Teachers
  • Feb 15: No School, President's Day
  • Feb 24: ACT Exam for JUNIORS ONLY (all others have a virtual learning Day)  ACT Information

Sincerely, and remember Berlin Pride... It's Forever!

Principal's Message 1.29.21

Hello Bear Families,

We have come to the end of what seemed like a long but definitely good week.  It always feels a little longer when you have a full week after a week that started with a four day weekend.  With that being said, even though it is COLD outside, things are HEATING up here in DoubleBlue country!

Next week we begin to celebrate Black History month and look into the month's theme of "Hidden Heroes".  I would encourage you to talk to your student(s) about the message this next month and follow the building Twitter page and Instagram page for photos.  The Diversity club and several teachers in our building have worked hard to put a lot of information and educating facts and stories into a video, as well as pictures.  Speaking of both of those social media outlets (Twitter and Instagram), the main goal of the building page is to give updates, information, and celebrations about everything in and around 3140BSR.  There might be lighthearted tweets and posts now and again, but they are always about Bears and the POSITIVE things we are doing.  Even with the pandemic, as the Principal, I work hard to attend and take pictures at a wide variety of events.  Mr. Betz and the Assistant Principals work to do the same.  In addition, the following day we try to put those great things we saw on the announcements.  If something is not on the announcements, it is most likely because we did not receive information from a coach or a representative from the team.  As you know, at Berlin, we really try to put everyone in the spotlight at one time or another.

On that note, the spotlight is exactly what this week and next week are all about.  Yesterday and today, we had our group/club photos in the gymnasium.  Mrs. Bush and her team of students helped 1,400 BEARS in and out of the gym over the two-day period so that they could get into those yearbook photos.  What a great part of the high school experience.  I know that if I take a minute to think about it, I can remember a photo or two from my time in high school and the pages from my high school yearbooks.  Also, next week we will spotlight all our Bears again with class meetings.  Grades 9-11 will all go into the auditorium at different times for the annual scheduling meeting.  Our counselors will cover what classes are offered in the building if there are pre-requisites for those classes, as well as answer all questions about the scheduling process.  The goal is for our students to leave the auditorium with a good understanding of what they need to do during this scheduling time.

As a parent, you might be asking yourself how you can help in the process?  Well, it is really a two-step process.  Students need to fill out the scheduling sheet all of them will receive at the end of the meeting.  Also, they will need to put requests into the Power School Student portal.  To help with this, it will be beneficial to go to the course planning guide on the OBHS student services page.  If you or your student has any questions whatsoever, do not hesitate to email or call the student services office or counselor directly.  We want this to be a smooth and easy process for you and your student.

Normally, I meet with all classes individually one time every nine weeks.  I do this because I value the relationships I have with the students at Berlin.  I want them to hear things directly from me and I want to be there to answer questions for them.  However, due to the hybrid schedule, I did not want to essentially double the amount of days students are out of class for class meetings.  So, I met with all of them on the first two days of school, and then again during the first semester.  So, this will now be the third time I am meeting with them until a couple of weeks before the year ends.  In fact, I canceled the senior meetings because I know they are writing college essays and other SENIOR related items.  We will meet again a couple of times as a class in the auditorium, it might just be a few weeks down the road.

We all want to make sure they finish strong.  This means academically, athletically, and all the way around.  We are all here to help.  In addition, I want to remind them to make good choices.  Even though it is only January, it is never too early to send some quick reminders.  Since 2018, I have never had any issues with students playing senior tag or participating in any type of senior prank related nonsense.  I believe the reason is that they understand what is on the line and they also have a respect level for me, the Berlin tradition, and everyone that has worked so hard to make 3140BSR a great place to be.  Please know that if someone does make a poor choice with either of those things, they need to understand that participation in any type of senior activities or graduation ceremonies will most likely be forfeited.  Having been an administrator for 19 years, I have seen too many negative outcomes for both actions to take them lightly.  Thank you for your help with this message.

Last, I would like to ask all parents to remind their students of the following house cleaning items.  Our students do a great job with policies and procedures at Berlin, but a reminder every now and again is always a good thing.  So, here they are:

-Please continue to always wear your mask CORRECTLY.

-Walk "up" the "up" stairs and "down" the "down" stairs

-Make sure that your school clothes are appropriate.  The rule of thumb always is, if you have to question it in your head, then the outfit is not appropriate.  😉

-Sanitize going in and out of class

-Use your phone to sign in to your lunch each day

Thank you for taking all of this in.  I know it was a long Bear Tracks this week, but there is a lot going on at 3140BSR!!  Below is a bullet point list of dates, times, and activities here at Berlin!

  • Feb 1 & 2: Class Meetings
  • Feb 4 & 5: Homebase Schedule

  • Feb 15: No School, President's Day
  • Feb 24: ACT Exam for JUNIORS ONLY (all others have a virtual learning Day)  ACT Information

That is all for now.  Thank you for all of your support, and please remember Berlin Pride.....It's Forever!

Principal's Message 1.15.21

Bear Families,

I hope all is well.  The first semester has officially ended.  We have all said it before, but over the past 4-5 months, we were unsure if we would even be able to return to school in any capacity.  Well, here we are.  The hybrid schedule has allowed all of us to have some sense of normalcy and also participate in extracurriculars, in addition, to attend on A or B track days.  So, with that being said, I for one am grateful for the work that the District Leadership Team, Board of Education, Staff, Parents, and maybe most importantly Students have done to make this all possible.  The attention to detail when it comes to safety and a true concern for others' well-being has really been wonderful.  Thank you all!

As we ended up the last week of the semester, we had two Homebase schedule days.  We have a group of dedicated teachers (Mrs. Ross, Mrs. Middleton, Mrs. Trostle, and Mrs. Lewis) that lead our Junior and Senior Claw Team members.  The Claw Team numbers over 100 students that work in the building to lead by example and help make this building a special place.  They jumped into action again this week during Homebase days.  I wanted to share what was accomplished on those days so that as always you are in the loop and the communication is consistent and constant.

Our Claw Team students went into all Freshman HB rooms and talked about the following:

-Scheduling for 10th-grade year

-Questions and Answers about being a sophomore

-Joining clubs or activities (which ones might be a good fit)

-Elective course conversations

-Scheduling in general

-What things could they help them with after a semester of HS under their belt

-Encouraged them to "stay the course" and stay positive

-All of the great things we CAN do and not focus on what we cannot do

-Sense of Belonging at Berlin

etc...

Other upper-class Homebase rooms discussed:

-Scheduling

-College decisions/applications

-AP / CCP

-Feedback about hybrid schedules

-Conversations about inclusiveness and sense of belonging

-"What is on their mind" after completing a successful hybrid first semester

-etc...

As you can see, it was a very busy but very successful couple of days with home base conversations.  Thank you to the Claw Team advisors and to the students on Claw Team.  I would like to close by listing the dates of some upcoming deadlines and activities in and around the building

  • Jan 18: No School, MLK Jr. Day
  • Feb 10 & 18: Parent-Teacher Conferences (Sign-ups posted on Feb 3rd @ 3pm)
  • Feb 12: No School, Professional Development Day for Teachers
  • Feb 15: No School, President's Day
  • Feb 24: ACT Exam for JUNIORS ONLY (all others have a virtual learning Day)

That is all for now.  I appreciate all of the constant support, positive and constructive conversations that continue to occur and I look forward to a very successful second semester for all our Bear students.
